Reengineering French Bulldogs’ Faces To Make Them Healthier
Hawbucks French Bulldogs based right outside of Rotterdam, Netherlands is making a stand against breeders who don't take responsibility for the ethics of their work.
The French Bulldog first appeared in Paris in the mid-nineteenth century, the result of cross-breeding of Toy Bulldogs imported from England and local Parisian ratters. It is a stocky, compact dog with a friendly, mild-mannered temperament, but unfortunately, as a consequence of selective breeding, French Bulldogs are disproportionately affected by health-related problems.
Thats where Chantal and Krigin come into the picture. These two, who founded Hawbucks, started out their journey as two dog loving parents who adopted a six-year-old French Bulldog named Quinta. Quinta was a perfect match for them making them fall in love with the breed, however, by the time she turned nine she was having health problems.
"Arount that time Quinta got worse. The consequences of her
uninterested breeders became more obvious. Quinta was 8 years old
and she could not run for an extended period of time. Halfway
through our daily long walk she needed help. She could not keep up
anymore. Quinta had a bad spine, wich is a big problem within the
French Bulldogs."
Seeing their beloved dog struggle to walk and do everyday tasks broke their heart. After the heartbreak subsided in came the anger; anger at the dog breeders who only look out for their own bottom line and not the health of the dogs. Seeking to be a lighthouse in the stormy world of dog breeding, Chantal and Krigin founded Hawbucks, a radically different type of kennel.
"Our kennel is born out of frustration. Frustraton about the mysteries that are kept in breeders, about the overall health of the breed and even about the individual dogs. Frustration that one seems to find some abnormalties totally normal. Frustration because often there is no transparency about the disases that are within the breed, or that they keep their mouth shut on the purpose about it.
We do not claim to know it all. The only thing we can do is promise that we will try our utmost best to breed healthy French Bulldogs.
That is what we aspire. That is what we stand for"
