Terms of Service

These terms are an agreement between you and the operator of Happy Daze ("Happy Daze", "we"), an independently run science-news publication available at happydaze.io and through the Happy Daze iOS app (together, the "Service"). By using the Service you agree to them.

1. Reading is free

Reading Happy Daze is free and always will be. Some stories, and some features, are for Premium members.

2. Accounts

You may create an account to save stories, comment, and manage a membership. Keep your password private; you're responsible for activity on your account. You must be at least 13 to create one. We may suspend or close accounts that abuse the Service or violate these terms.

3. Premium membership

Premium is a monthly subscription that unlocks every Premium story, the unlimited home feed, advanced search, the full topics directory, full-article emails with topic controls, and other member features we add.

Billing. On the website, Premium is billed monthly by Stripe. In the iOS app, it is billed by Apple through your Apple ID and governed by Apple's terms. Prices are shown before you subscribe and may change with notice; changes take effect at your next renewal.

Renewal and cancellation. Subscriptions renew automatically each month until cancelled. You can cancel anytime — on the website from your account page, or for Apple subscriptions in your Apple ID settings. Cancelling stops future charges; your access continues until the end of the period you've paid for.

Refunds. We don't offer refunds for partial periods. Purchases made through Apple follow Apple's refund process, which we don't control.

Access. Premium access is checked live: it starts when payment is confirmed and ends when your subscription ends. Membership is personal to your account and may not be shared or resold.

4. Newsletters

Subscribing to email means you agree to receive our newsletters at the cadence you choose. Every email includes an unsubscribe link. Members can control which topics reach their inbox from their account.

5. Your content

If you post comments, you keep ownership of them and give us a non-exclusive license to display them on the Service. Don't post anything unlawful, harassing, defamatory, or infringing, or spam. We may remove content or comments at our discretion.

6. Our content

Happy Daze articles, images, video, and design are protected by copyright and belong to us or our licensors. You may share links freely and quote brief excerpts with attribution. You may not republish full articles, scrape the Service, or use our content to train machine-learning models without written permission. Some articles summarize published scientific research; those papers belong to their authors and journals, and we link to the source.

7. Accuracy and no professional advice

We work hard to report accurately, but science news is not medical, legal, financial, or professional advice. Nothing here replaces advice from a qualified professional. Corrections are welcome via the contact page.

8. Availability and changes

We may change, suspend, or discontinue features of the Service. We'll try to give notice of significant changes affecting paid features. The Service is provided "as is"; to the fullest extent permitted by law we disclaim warranties and are not liable for indirect or consequential damages. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.

9. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Disputes will be handled in the courts of that state, except where your local consumer law gives you rights that can't be waived.

10. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms; the date at the top shows the current version. Continued use after a change means you accept it. For material changes to paid features we'll notify subscribers.
